Worm Castings Jewellery

£28.00

These wonderful worm castings are made by worms in a woodland with rich, clay soil, and are grounding and balancing for the wearer.

Each casting is unique in shape and size. They are collected from the surface of the ground, causing no damage, unlike gold, diamonds and other highly valued material. Once dry, they are fired to 1250*C and glazed with lustres. In this way, the worms’ cyclical, ephemeral outputs are made permanent, transformed into art objects; the aesthetic quality of their forms highlighted and valued.

The castings are created in a process called vermicomposting, which releases essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are vital for all plant growth. They also contain beneficial microbes that help improve soil structure, aeration and water retention.

Clay soil is a significant component of earth’s soil composition, formed over tens of thousands of years through the slow weathering of rocks and minerals, particularly those rich in silicate. Healthy soil is a dynamic living ecosystem. Worms are not alone in the ground, a gram of soil can contain 50,000 species, all interacting with eachother in a system as complex as the biodiversity in our own bodies.

Soil is vitally important to the health of the planet, food systems and ourselves, and this is becoming increasingly apparent as food quality, biodiversity and health diminishes.

Micro fauna and the herds of beneficial bacteria that exist in soil, release vitamins, chemicals, hormones etc that are so important for the health of the human body and psyche; from the food we eat, to all our contact with the natural world.

Micobacterium vaccae with its anti- inflammatory, immunoregulatory and stress- resilience properties, accessible simply by touching soil is just part of the microbial life force that is needed for health and wellbeing. It is a natural anti-depressant, far preferable to the SSRIs so routinely prescribed for what is often, a loss of connection.

Join us in wearing this syntropic jewellery, as we endeavour to rediscover our intrinsic connection with all life forms.
