Well Dressing update

I’m now working on the wellhead mosaic for @lewesrailwayland @heritagefunduk depicting all the wonderful flora and fauna living in this unique habitat. It’s a pleasure to recognise the importance of water in all our lives and the unique chalk river that flows through here.

Well Dressing has ancient pagan origins that have changed over the centuries and vary in different regions. Essentially the purity of water is celebrated, as is its continuous supply. The Peak District is most famous for its well dressing, often with temporary installations made from flowers attracting 35000 visitors to over 80 villages.

This piece is permanent, made in ceramic, including lots of pieces made by local people.

Sussex has many deep wells, such as the one in Woodingdean, with a depth of 390 metres (1,280 ft), making it the deepest hand-dug well in the world.
